Dan is a native of Batavia Illinois where he now resides with his family. Dan became fascinated with his uncle's trumpet discovered in the attic. He began tuba in the 5th grade and started bass in high school, he has remained fascinated with music and instruments ever since. Dan's music studies include the completion of the curricula at the Interlochen Arts Academy, University of Illinois and Northwestern University. Additionally, Dan has studied tuba privately with Arnold Jacobs and Gene Pokorny of the Chicago Symphony and bass with Dave Holland and Rufus Reid. Dan's performance experience spans the last 28 years primarily free-lancing in the Chicago music scene. His tenures and guest appearances encompass a broad stylistic spectrum and a wide variety of musical groups. Among them are;
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Jon Faddis director, The Chicago Brass Quintet, The Von Freeman Jazz Quintet, The Ray Charles Orchestra, The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, The Chicago Jazz Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. A sampling of the many musicians Dan has shared the stage with are; Buddy DeFranco, Clark Terry, David Sanchez, Houston Persons, Joe Lovano Luciano Pavarotti and Charlie Haden.
Dan's other work includes numerous recordings for television and radio commercials, playing in the pit orchestras for Broadway in Chicago, the Paramount Theatre and Drury Lane Theaters and appearing at many of Chicago's Jazz venues, including the Green Mill Lounge. Dan has toured Taiwan, Brazil and the U.S. with the Chicago Brass Quintet. He has appeared at jazz/music festivals in Germany, Italy, Yugoslavia, Canada, Chicago, Ravinia and Aspen. Dan's teaching career includes private lesson duties at New Trier High School, Vandercook College, DePaul University, Columbia College, Northern Illinois University and University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.
Most recently Dan has been teaching at Ill Math and Sciences (not math and science however) and is available for lessons at his home studio. Dan enjoys teaching for both Brass and Bass. Dan always tries to bring relaxed spontaneity and positive energy to every performance and lesson. He views music as a life-long endeavor.
